SOBEL In a 6-2 vote on July 6, the Northport-East Northport Board of Education resolved to appointa person to the seat from which former member Tim Burton resigned after citing \personal rea- sons\ in a July 5 letter to District Clerk Chnstina McCulloch. Burton had one year left in his term. He was not at the organizational meeting last Wednesday and was not available for comment at press time. Candidates for the seat will be considered from a pool of community applicants; the five candidates whose bids for hoard seats failed in the last election would be eligible to apply The application deadline is noon on Friday, July 29. The appointee will finish the remainder of Burton's term and have the option of running in the May 2006 clection to keep the seal. Former board President Warren Arthur. who lost his bid for re-election by three votes, said he plans to submit an application \I would like to continue the work we did as a board over the past 12 years,\ Arthur said, \and I think I am the most qualified candidate for the position.\ Arthur agreed with the current board's majority who voted to See Burton's appoint a candidate. However. if no letter, qualified candidate is seen during page A14 the application process, he said,. then the board should proceed with a public election. However, both freshman board members, Phil Fortuna and Denise Summers Mumm. who took their administrative oaths last Wednesday, opposed the resolu- ton to appoint a new member.
