MORGAN A change-of-command ceremony, one of the oldest traditions of the mar- itime services, was held at the Eaton's Neck Coast Guard Station last Friday. The ceremony signifies more than just the relief of one commanding officer by another, but also the transfer of total responsibility, authority and account- ability- forthe unit and the accomplish- ment of its assigned mission. The departing commanding officer, readhlsmdetsmmporttoConstGmrd Davenport was ready. He understood the exigencies of command and he came through. Good leadership doesn't just happen.\ - CAPTAIN PETER J. BOYNTON, COMMANOING OFFICER COAST GUARD SECTOR LONG ISLAND SOUND Headquarters in Washington, D.C. - where he would take up the billet of boatswains' mate detailer -- as the arriv- ing commanding officer, Chief Warrant Officer Zachary K. Cummings, read his orders to command at Eaton's Neck. Both men did so in the presence of Captain Peter J. Boynton, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. All were in dress whites with white gloves and swords Salutes were exchanged, at which instant Cummings became the new CO of Eaton's Neck Station. Acting as master of ceremonies. Chief Boatswain's Mate Rick Ball described Davenport's career. Davenport entered the Coast Guard in 1985 and served aboard the cutters Point Ledge (WPB 82234) and Gentian (WLB 290) He was commanding officer of the sta- tion at Jones Beach and executive officer of the station at Fire Island.
