10 Give the TV a rest, listen to live music To the Editor: \Old Songs\ is a treasure in Voorheesville. On Saturday evening, we attended a Chris Norman con- cert at Old Songs. He was an unfamiliar artist to us at the time of the concert, but it was one of the best musical experiences we have had in a long time. He is a fantastic wooden flute artist from Nova Scotia, and with his group of four he gave a concert to remember. 1 feel we are incredibly lucky to live in an area where such concerts are available with a ticket price that is affordable. Old Songs sponsors several con- certs a year with an opportunity for everyone to hear many different types of music and artists that are both traditional and world renowned. They certainly have a talent for selecting the best. You may not be familiar with the name of the artist when you buy your ticket, but, when the concert has ended you will have enjoyed a special treat. Old Songs also gives many people the chance to learn a new instrument with classes in the spring and fall for six-week ses- sions. The teachers are great, we have lots of laughs, make new friends, and become a little more talented as time goes by. After the holidays, when winter doldrums start to set in, reserve tickets for the next con- cert and enjoy. Give the TV and the sitcoms a rest and listen to live music. You'll be glad you did. The first tribe to assume the name of the Improved Order of Red Men was Tribe #1 in Balti- more, Md., granted on March 14, 1835. The Order of Red Men finally operated under a charter granted by a special act of Congress approved on April 17, 1906 and bears the signature of President Theodore Roosevelt. The auxiliary, the Pocahantas, and the Red Men were a com- munity type, non-profit organ- ization. They supported Amer- ican Flag recognition programs, and have a National Red Men's Day at Arlington National Cemetery to honor unknown soldiers fallen in battle. The land in Guilderland on which the Wigwam stood was given to the First Baptist Church in 1821 by Henry Sloan, owner of Sloan's Hotel, a short distance west of the Wigwam on the Great Western Turnpike. Ceremonial garb was used for special events. The hall was used as a town polling place, and for community Christmas parties. During World War II, women of the town rolled bandages for the Red Cross there. The Juniata Council 259 of the Pocahantas based in Colonie is the only council left in the tri-city area. It struggles to survive. There is an aged Wigwam at the intersection of Route 30A and Polin Road in Charleston (Mont- gomery County). Historian Lorraine Whiting of that town informed us that the building is just barely standing. The Town of Esperance Historical Society meets in a former Red Men's Hall. It's museum holds a fine display of Red Men's artifacts, a true remembrance of a unique piece of America's history. Tk0dstgrStip dftM Improved 0r^ of the Red Men's Wigwam in the 1950's.
