These workshops have ranged from comfortable and practical understanding of the critical elements of special-edu- cation law to having a Medicaid and Food Stamp Application Day with the Albany County Department of Social Services. We will be having more free events at our Hilltown site for families during the year geared towards IEP (Individualized Educaton Program) review, behavior plans, and talking with your kids about drugs. Mark your calendars for our up- coming events (most located at our Hilltown Family Center) and please feel free to stop by and check us out. We are located at 96 Main Street, East Berne. Upcoming events include: — April 18, at 6:30 p.m.: A steering committee meeting at the Westerlo Baptist Church; — April 25, at 6:30 p.m.: An IEP review with special educa- tion advocates; — May 13, from 9 a.m. to noon: \Enforcing Your Rights in Special Education\ by Julie Michaels Keegan, Esq.; and — May 16, at 6:30 p.m.: 'Talking With Your Kids about Drugs\ and \What Happens When Someone Spikes the Punch\ with New York State Trooper Steve Rothwein. Please let us know if you would like to be added to our Hilltown Family Center mailing list to learn more about future work- shops and events. Old Men of the Mountain Hype on flu is for the birds By John R. Williams ' On April 4, the Old Men of the Mountain met at a new/old place. The Main Street Cafe in Schoharie is now Grandma's (who we never saw, the name may be a shill). The restaurant has been com- pletely done over, especially the bathrooms. A cruddy bathroom can be a real turn-off no matter how fancy the eating area is, and sometimes as good as the food is the condition of the restroom will turn it into a place not to go to. The place is new and, while we were there, we had the undivided attention of the cook and waiter because only one couple came in. They probably did not know what they were getting into, especially when one OG got up and kissed the waiter. That's enough to turn your stomach, but we are used to this type of shenanigans. The food was good and this scribe heard no complaints on that score. Bird flu We discussed the press's new venture to keep selling papers, and keep listeners turned into the radio, and the tube, and that is the coming pandemic. That is bird flu. Like Y2K? The OF's are getting ready for a non-event. We did admit that being 100- percent sure of anything is like being 100-percent sure of nothing. We all said we don't eat raw chicken, and most like it well done, even though a little moist. We don't hunt much anymore — oh, maybe for our teeth or glasses in the morning — but that is about it. This, as far as the OF's go, let's out the occasional goose that is returning from wherever. One OF knows of someone building a hen house and getting some chicks so he can have his own eggs, and the occasional chicken-and-biscuits Sunday dinner. But how bout the weasel that dines on a migratory bird, and then makes a visit to your hen house? Like we said, there is no real way to be 100-percent sure of anything. Death and taxes may- be, but even those can be iffy. Manage to live on $9,800 a year or less, that takes care of taxes; read Matthew 27:50-54; that takes care of death. Stereotypical OF's We also delved into some really true, but politically in- correct discussions this morning that, unfortunately, can't be reported here. They were quite funny. Basically it strengthened the fact that stereotypes are generally earned and not just handed out on a one-shot basis. Being stereotyped can be either good or bad. The phrase \Birds of a feather flock to- gether,\ is a form of stereo- typing. The Irish have the stereotypical name \Fighting Irish,\ and that's not a bad thing. The OMOTM are, and proud of it, stereotypical OF's; we wave our canes high and take the moniker graciously. This is not a bad thing either. We discussed briefly the fact that this is the time of year when not only is the maple syrup production winding down, but it is time to think about taking that thing-u-ma-jig out of storage that displaces water so the Owners of these thing-u-ma-jigs can pour money into the wet hole that they make after displacing the water they are occupying. Those attending Grandma's Restaurant on Main St. in Schoharie and able to talk freely because it was only us were: Wally Quay Sr., Miner Stevens, Don Moser, Harold Guest, Steve Kelly, Carl Walls, Arnold Geraldsen, Gary Porter, Robie Osterman, Skip Skinner, Frank Pauli, Ted Pelkey, Steve Torok, Gerd Remmers, Harold Grip- pen, Ted Willsey, Jim Rissacher, Mike Willsey, Bob Galusha, and me. iewe Q/maaed> .8f ^yOodu KpWVV * '@Te/ievlnfj' 0reS 16 Ow*$6... ffie/axmai6mart// Now accepting new clients/or Massage Therapy appointments...
