Galvin Alma Heidinger ALTAMONT — Alma Heidinger was a strong woman who overcame cruelties in her early life in Yugoslavia, becoming a proud American and loving mother. \She was a good, good lady,\ said her daughter, Louise Tepley. \She was my buddy besides being my mother.\ Mrs. Heidinger died Friday, March 10, 2006, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland. She was 89. She was born in Yugoslavia and had a hard life there as a girl, her daughter said. \Her mother died when she was three,\ said Ms. Tepley. \Her father remarried and she had to live in the stable with the animals. They treated her like a scullery maid. 'Giving, caring, loving.' \She had horror stories,\ said Ms. Tepley, telling one. \She had lice so her stepmother would pour kerosene on her head. No one would sit next to her in school...The kerosene burned her ears and, in the back, they were all rotted.\ Mrs. Heidinger came to the United States in 1939, sponsored by an aunt, when she was 29 years old. \She got the last boat out of Germany before the war broke out with the United States,\ said her daughter. She rode the S.S. Breman into Ellis Island. \She told me, when she landed, she kissed the ground she set foot on.. .Her biggest pride was to become an American citizen, and she did,\ said Ms. Tepley. She worked hard cleaning houses and took pride in learning English. She married John Heidinger, who died in 1983. They lived in Queens on Long Island. \My father spoke German at home, and Mama would say, 'Here, we speak English.'\ Ms. Tepley described her mother with three adjectives — \giving caring, loving\ — and went on to say, \She supported me in rough times. She was always there for me.\ Ms. Tepley and Mrs. Heidinger moved to Altamont in 2003. \My cousins, John and Mary, lived here 30 years, and we always dreamed of living here,\ said Ms. Tepley. She has not been disappointed. \People have been good to us here/' she said. \I want to thank everyone for their kindness and caring.\ Altamont was.a place where her mother felt at home. \All she ever wanted was for everyone to get along, to keep the peace, to love each other,\ Ms. Tepley said. \She worked'hard in this country,\ said Ms. Tepley, \and she would send care packages home to her father with sugar and coffee. My aunt asked why she would do that after she had been treated so badly. She said, 'He is still my father.\' Ms. Tepley concluded, \She was a good person. She might not have had a great education, but she had a lot of common sense. She was a strong, strong woman.\ *** Mrs. Heidinger is survived by two sons, Alfred Butscher of Queens and John HeidingerofStaten Island; one daughter, LouiseTepley of Altamont; two grandchildren, Debra Ann Tepper and'Wiltiam Brian Schneider; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa Ashley Tepper, Thomas James Tepper, and Mathieu Brian Schneider. Calling hours were held on Monday, March 13, at the Frendendall Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will take place o-t Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island. — Melissa Hale-Spencer
