GBC girls GUILDERLAND — Accord- ing to coaches Mary Schmitz and Nick Mesiti, the Guilderland Junior A team played the game of the year against East Green- bush in the Capital District Girls' Basketball League playoffs on Saturday. Facing a team that has dominated them for a long time the Junior A's were ready to play. With nine eighth-graders finishing their careers with GBC (Andrea Mesiti, Chelsea Weston, Erin Kelly, Hannah Scott, Kat Keegan, Lee Arduini, Lissie Mar- tin, Marissa Page, and Taylor Mead), this was to be an exciting and emotional game. After a slow offensive start for both teams, Chelsea Weston (eight points, four rebounds) finally got the A team on the board and with the lead. With Hannah Scott, Taylor Mead, Rachel Weston, and Erin Kelly (one point) playing an aggres- sive defense and with Andrea Mesiti (10 points) and Lissie Martin (14 points, five rebounds) leading the offense, the half ended in a 24-24 tie. The second half saw the scoring attack of the Guilderland guards as Lee Arduini (two points), Kat Keegan (seven points) and Janae Lyde (six points) ran the offense. The lead continued to change hands throughout the half. Marissa Page (four points, seven re- bounds) made key shots and steals as the game ended in a tie 49-49. As they entered overtime, the Junior A team had several key players in foul trouble. But they continued to play their signature upbeat, aggressive style of ball. With the game tied 52-52, nine seconds left and East Greenbush in possession, Guilderland tightened their defense forcing the East Greenbush player to take an off-balance shot as the clock wound down. The ball circled the hoop and fell in as the Junior A team stood in shock and East Greenbush won 54-52. Coach Schmitz and Coach Mesiti both said despite the loss, this Junior A team, many of whom have played since third grade, is one.of the best and most talented to ever play for GBC. Sport short While the Denver Broncos are the sixth team to go to at least five Super Bowls, they are the only club in that group to meet a different foe (Cowboys,- Giants, Redskins, 49ers, and Packers) in each contest.
