Dormansville By Frances Swart o 797-3730 With the arrival of the month of March, we think spring, although we still may experience some snow. A welcome sight has been the appearance of robins on nearby yards. It is always a pleasure to have someone tell us they have seen robins. • > This?is also the beginning of |h^3|eiiti|ri Season: This. Friday, |||r|^^ the Greenville Area Inirallit|i r (Gbuncil will have, a service: ih; Greenville at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church* for the presentation of the Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. On Thursday, March 16, the service will be in the Dormans- ville United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Steven Peiffer and guest speaker, Swami Bruce Hilliger. Note that the church is located on Route 312, a right-hand turn from Route 143 just past the firehouse. The United Methodist Women's meeting was canceled on March 2, due to weather predictions, when snow fell all around us, especially to the south. The Call to Prayer and Self Denial service will be held in conjunction with the April 6 meeting. Memories of a former pastor Letters have been found that were written by Pastor Robert Bowering in his travels around the world during a leave of absence from pastoral duties. A friend offered to help with ex- penses if Rev. Bowering would go with him on this trip. They sailed on a cargo ship, the S.S. Brooklyn Heights, on Dec. 22,1962, which meant there were stop-overs in many ports. This gave them an opportunity to visit the sights and tour the cities. Letters were written to friends in both of our churches des- cribing the voyage. One was written on Jan. 29, 1962, in Karachi, Pakistan, which said they were 10 hours ahead of our time and that he had changed his watch 10 times since leaving Brooklyn on Dec. 22, 1961, He was about 9,064 miles from New York and enjoying summer weather while thinking about the winter time of the year that was before us herer' ------ It seemed to have impressed him, as he mentioned it was the first time in his life he had en- joyed summer weather all winter long. Having grown up in Newfoundland as a fisher- man, the occupation of his family, he knew what cold weather was like, and winter here, mentioning the winter of 1960. His letters also listed.ail, the places jyhere they hgid. stopped- Another letter noted he < was writing March 22, and the ship was moving about 15 miles per hour. From Japan, they sailed to San Francisco, then Panama, Puerto Rico, and finally, back to New York. He would be back to preach on May 6, 1962. He closed with the words, \May you be blest real good. I am enjoying health, thank God. Your Pastor Robert Bowering.\ What a different world today as we think of Pakistan and surrounding countries. While he was away, our church was served by Cal Hand with his wife, who also came with him each Sunday from Delmar. He was just beginning his ministry. The complete letters will be placed in the Memorial Book in our church for anyone who would like to read them in their entirety. The address was simple then, just Dormansville, U.S.A. No ZIP code and yet they were delivered safely and on time, which doesn't always happened today with all our modern devices. Those attending ;we.re Marcia Pangburn, her dau|hit6^ %ra, and Chuck Swan^ Katihy. and Gary Garnevale; John Vartigan; Melissa Maikoff; and Dan Ricketts and his daughter, Danielle. Also,. Veronica Clark and children, Samson and Nichole. Westerlo By Betty Blodgett J 797-3740 Thompsons Lake By Lora Ricketts 872-1691 On Sunday, Feb. 26, my husband, Ray Ricketts, and I hosted a roast-pork dinner and birthday party for our three eldest grandchildren: Brandon Clark (Feb. 27), Kassi Neal (March 1), and Miles Pangburn (Feb. 18). After dinner, they opened their gifts of money, clothes (hunting apparel for the men), also sweaters, and a Tinker Bell nightlight for Kassi. The March winds are really blowing again today, the first Friday in March. There has been so much wind so far this year, but a lack of snow — a very strange winter, for sure. - The last two storms have stayed south of us. We only had a dusting from the last one yesterday, Most of the usual winter outdoor events have been canceled all around us, due to lakes'not being frozen and a lack of snow except for the ski areas. that can make their own snow. Another Westerlo resident left us We lost a long-time Westerlo resident when Millie Quick passed away Feb. 26, at the St. Peter's Hospice. I had known Millie for at least 50 years. At one time, she ran a small nursing home north of Reidsville. She was a hard- working woman all her life. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends. Rest in peace now Millie — you deserve it and earned it, too. A surprise visitor Yesterday, Todd Winne and his two children, Keith, three, and little Ellen, surprised me by stopping by to say hello and have me meet little Ellen, born last year. Todd stopped by at the Rescue Squad building down the road from here to see the pro- gress with the new addition for the ambulance garage, which was needed. A visit tp Proctor's . Earlier! .last; we^ek,4w' daugh- ter, Karen, her husband; Mark, along with some, friends, drove into Schenectady to see The Phantom of the Opera at Proc- tor's Theatre, which they en- joyed so .very much. I believe this was the first time most of them ever attended an opera. Before the program, they enjoyed dinner together at a restaurant nearby. After the- ..opera, they stopped at another restaurant for dessert. Karen told me they had a super time. My turn, next month On April 2,1 will be attending \The Smucker's Stars on Ice\ at .the. Pepsi Arena, with Karen and Mark, as a treat for me. Karen knows how much I enjoy watch- ing ice skating. They have the tickets for it already. They were careful to pick us good seats so I won't have too many stairs to climb. Now, isn't that thoughtful of them to do for me? I know most of the skaters from other shows I attended before and watched on television. Scott Hamilton — my favorite — is the director of this show. Sue would love to meet him, to tell him how much I always enjoy his skating and antics. He has slowed down lately, due to health problems. I am looking forward to that date. Prayer requests Remember in prayer, Ralph Gardiner and his family; the family of Millie Quick; Ken Stark; Candy Stark's sister, Cheryl; Terri McDermott; and the Walter Longs. Also remember our President and staff, our overseas troops, and always, our dear country. Special days Happy birthday wishes to Alice Risley and Phyllis Wolf on March 15. Anniversary congratulations to: • — Nick and Sheran Gaspar on March 12; — Charlie and Terri McDermott on March 16; — Dwight and Pat Brainard on March 17; and — Cliff and Janice Chase on March 18.
