Lewis and Clark Exploration to be explored By Lou Domanico GUILDERLAND CENTER — Lewis and Clark's famed expe- dition from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean and back will be detailed at the Guilderland Historical Society's meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, at the Mynderse-Frederick House on Route 146 in Guilder- land Center. Lorraine Whiting, historian for the town of Charleston, and Susan Pabiani, regent of the Old Hellebergh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; will outline the epic exploration led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1803 to 1806. Whiting and Fabiani will use maps, excerpts from published journals kept by members of the expedition, and other historical documents and artifacts to detail the task launched by President Thomas Jefferson after he en- gineered the Louisiana Pur- chase. The deal nearly doubled the size of the United States and Jefferson needed to know what he had bought. He sent Army officers Lewis and Clark and their, small Corps of Discovery on the trek through uncharted lands to the Pacific coast. Questions regarding the expe- dition will be welcome, and the meeting is open to all. Feura Bush Neighborhood Association elects officers, plans for Plum Fest By Judy Wing NEW SCOTLAND —\The Feura Bush Neighborhood Asso- ciation held officer elections on Jan. 18, to serve for the next two years. They are as follows: Judith Wirtg, president; Diane Carroll, vice president; Virginia Fissette, recording secretary; Kempton Smith, treasurer; and Molly Carroll, corresponding secretary and newsletter editor. The main activity of the asso- ciation in the coming months will concern the Plum Fest which will be held Sept. 16. The New Scotland Historical Asso- ciation started the festival, which rotates annually among the vari- ous hamlets in the town of New Scotland. This year, the Plum Fest will be held in Feura Bush and sponsored by the Feura Bush Neighborhood Association. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are planned, as well as garage sales, a book sale, and various events related to history. Daffodil Days The American Cancer Soci- ety's Daffodil Days sale deadline has been extended to March 10. Daffodils are currently being pre-sold in businesses, schools, churches, and community organizations, and will be avail- able for pick up on March 21. Delivery is available for quali- fied orders. Zonta Club to honor young women in public affairs The Zonta Club of Albany is soliciting applications from young women in Capital District high schools for its annual Young Women in Public Affairs Award. The goal of the program is to encourage young women to participate in community ser- vice projects and public affairs by recognizing their commit- ment to volunteer efforts for community organizations and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women. Applications for the $500 award are due by March 15 and can be obtained by contacting Carol Makowski at 453-9858. Applicants will be asked to ex- plain their community activities and the role models that inspired them to become involved in their communities.
