A great riot a.uougst a company o f Irish volun teers and some others took place ou the uighi of the 31st at an encauipineut opposite Barita, guns were tired aud 15 or 2 0 men are reported to have beeu killed or wounded. Besides the killed and wounded seen or known 8 or 10 are said to have been pushed overboard from a Steam boat lay ing by the shore, and drowned. The Col. of Georgia Regiment, gallantly at tempted with sword and Pistols iu baud to quell the riot and shot dowu oue man and wounded several others. Col. Baker o f ihe 4th Regiment, I liuois volunteers had ordered tw o o f ms compa ny to assist iu quelling the fight aud weut in per son w ith those men to a Steambuat. As soon as he got on board, he was attacked by the rioters and had a desperate conflict, defended liiiuseh bravely against swords, bayonets aud shot, but was finally shot in the neck. The ball entered behind, putting out through his collar b.me. O fthe 30 men who accompani ed Col. Baker, 8 w ere wounded. Oa the arrival of companies A. and G. Capt. R iberts ordered his men to charge oil board aud led to the -steps, where he received a severe wound from a buyo- uet, wliich entered near the shoulder blade and passed through his buck. The boat was so w e ll defended by the rioters that the Illinoiuus had to re t r e a t , n o t h a v i n g c a r t r i d g e s w i t h th e m . ^ A t n - munitiun was soon furnished, and on again ap proaching the boat, everything was quiet. No one of the Illinois Volunteers was killed, and it was thought Baker and R iberts would recover. It was feared two privates iu company C. were mortally wounded.
