SSSUM FWAM S Sfc GARDEN GUIDE G.V^^^^i^^iK^ Birch leaf m iners become active with unfolding leaves. One relatively safe and effective method of contr olling these in- sects which cause the leaves on birch trees to dry up and turn brown early in the season is I to use one of the new systemics which are put into the ground around the tree and are then taken up inside of the pl ant. Follow the directions on the package very carefully. Do not use moth balls to ke ep animals out of your garden if there are children around . They might be picked up and eaten— and they are poisonous. To feed bulbs , sprinkle 5- 10-5 fertilizer around on the gr ound , keep ing it off the leaves. Superphosphate may be sprinkled over the surface of perennial beds. Bone meal is also good but slow acting. Subscribe to the Beacon Call 587 - 5612
