It is greatly grieved at tbe tact that T h e Express, which is overwhelmed w ith annexation lctter.- from Canada, should now arid then print a few of those which state in the dearest way the arguments which ar- leading thoughtful Canadian.- to the conclusion that there is no escape Iron., their present condition save in nuion 1 with tiie States. If the Glolm wili take the trouble to turn over its li le ol The Express it will find th a t we have very frequently printed letters from correspondents who held different senti ments. W h en the Canadian journals learn to entertain opinions differing from those of their editors, m atters ol public importance will receive a light of which they aro at present deprive! in the Dominion. In tho case under consideration, 1 1 instance, the (Uni- pretends to deal w ith a letter w ritten to us hy Mr. (1. Duucan, of Hamilton, but it takes es pecial care not to print Mr. Duncan’s argument or even to state it with any thing like fairness. It is, possibly, very had for a gentle man in Hamilton that the editor of th*- irlohr, who “ knows something of the “ leading citizens of Hamilton,” is not acquainted with him. Tho fact, how ever, does not m ilitate against the truth of his position. To American readers and to many of those Canadians who, living near the borders, are accustomed lo read T h e Express and other American journals, there is something very fun ny in the way the (i!“hr turns and doubles now-a days. On Monday it solemnly addresses itself t<» the ta-k of showing soiiio mode of relief from the depression which is killing < auadiun trade, on Tuesday it declares th a t the Provinces win. never more prosperous, on W ednesday it establishes, appar ently to the satisfaction of all concern ed, th a t the crowds of young men wh - arc flocking to the. I'nited States un making a vast mistake, on Thursday it denies th a t there is any exodus ol young men from ( 'anada, and on Fri day it declares th a t twice us many young men are coming in from the old country as are leaving for the West. 'Po teach the a lesson in the art of giving both sides of a question wo reprint entire it reply to M r.D u n can; H is argum e n ts so far as he has any are chiefly of a pecuniary character. He says, indeed, t h a t the country is a t aatand- etill, aud th a t the people are leaving it as a consequence. Has th e m an lived live years in Ham ilton! W ill he tell us th a t th a t city has stood s till dnring t h a t period? Nome Canadians go to th e W e stern States indeed. But the m a jority of them proba b ly come ha«-k s a tulied th a t they can do b e tt e r in t h e ir ow n country. 4 'e rtainly a large num b e r do so. Mr. Duncan m akes a very g r e a t m istake in thinking t h a t there is a n v thing to l>e said for the U n ited States ou tho score of the economy practiced a t W a sh ington. Mr. Duncan has heard th a t t h e I nited S tates collected last year seven m illions of custom s duties on articles im p o rted from Canada, and jum p s at th e conclusion th»t C a n a d ians lose it all. A different opinion prevails in w e ll-inform e d circles iu the S tates. Business m en th e r e understand perfectly t h a t the A m e rican consum e rs pay m ore for C a n a d ian produce ou account cf th e tariff. In certain states of thu m a rket and upon certain articles, no doubt th e loir is with th e C a n a d ian seller. B u t no one anyw h e re pretends to believe th a t th a t :• alw a y s th e case. C e rtainly it is not tL* ease a t all w ith th e in q io r tan t articles i f lum b e r. B u t did we pay seven m illions a year to t h e American T reasury, we m ight offset it ia part a t luast by th e i r contribi: tions to our treasury — th o u g h wc do ne t believe m u cn in t h a t s tyle of reckoning on , cith e r side. W e could not afford to lie at ncxed—even considering the question from a pecuniary point of view —for the sake of tw ice seven m illions a year. Annexation would impose u p o n us t h e burdensome taxc j of the U n ited S tates, and take from us n« t seven m illions m erely, b u t something likt th ir ty millions h year. O u r share of the income tax alone would be from four to ?iv millions a n n u a lly, while o a r custom taxi s w o u ld l>e treble 1. And, besides, we ahoul i suffer from the unnatural advance in prices w h ich thesu taxes would produce here as i a th e States already oppressed by them .
