Lynbrook Resident Honored For Service As A Mercy Volunteer 'Toys For Tots\ Campaign Deck the Halls Recently, Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre honored its' volunteers by recogniz- ing those who have dedi- cated 100 hours or more to the hospital. In a special ceremony in Mercy's chapel, each volunteer was pres- ented with a commemora- tive pin. Rae Montemarano is pic- tured accepting her award from Sister Mary Thomas Foley, Director of Volun- teers at Mercy, and Richard C. Hermann, executive vice president and chief executive officer. As a not-for-profit hospi- tal, Mercy relies upon the service of volunteers who assist in various ways includ- ing transporting patients, delivering newspapers, and helping with clerical work. If you are interested in volun- teering, call 255-2493. The children at Peninsula Hospital center over the Christmas holiday were treated to holiday gifts from \Santa\ thanks to the \Toys for Tots\ campaign spon- sored by Dr. Steven M. Silberg, D.D.S. of East Rockaway. Dr. Silberg and his staff wish to thank all the East Rockaway and Lynbrook residents, who, after reading of the campaign in the \Observer\, donated a toy for the children. Also, all of Dr. Silberg's patients who supported him and brought smiles to the children's faces by bringing in gifts. Dr. Silberg invites anyone who wises to, to stop by his office at 460 Atlantic Avenue and read the heart- felt thank you letter he received from M. Eileen Valdini, Director of OPD Nursing at Peninsula Hospi- tal Center. Thank you for helping to make the holidays brighter for the children. Sacred Heart Explosion Rocks East Rockaway Home FALL FAIR: Dr. Mary Cecilia, ED.D., Principal (seated); William Brown of Williston Park; Tom Filardo of Lynbrook, Chairman; and Bill Cariello of Hempstead; sell plants and raffles at Sacred Heart Seminary's Fall Fair, held on the schoors grounds in Hempstead on September 30, 1989. Kiwanis EXPLOSION ROCKS EAST ROCKAWAY HOME. At twenty four minutes after midnight on December 12 The East Rockaway Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an explosion and house fire at 7 Acorn Road. On Arrival of the Fire Department units a heavy odor of gas was blanketing the area. Police and Fire officials quickly evacuated neighboring the area. Police and Fire officials quickly evacuated neighboring homes. The gas and electric was quickly shut off by the Fire Department and a search was made for victims. Fortunately, the owners were able to escape without injury. Lilco is presently investigating the cause of the explosion. (Photo by J. Cribbin) Elk's Memorial Service ELK'S MEMORIAL SERVICE. On Sunday, December 3rd, 1989, Lynbrook Elks Lodge #1515 conducted their annual Memorial Service. This service is an Elk tradition and is held on the first Sunday in December in every Elk Lodge in the United States. The purpose of the service is to give meaning to the words of the Elk toast \—An Elk is never forgotten, never forsaken-\. This year the service honored the memoryof eighteen brothers who passed away in the current year, and six hundred and forty-eight brothers from prior years.
