East Rockaway Welcomes Dr. William O'Sullivan At the regular, monthly East Rockaway Board of Education meeting, the Board appointed Dr. Wil- liam O'Sullivan as PPS Director, effective January 3, 1990. Dr. O'Sullivan joins East Rockaway after a very successful 20 year career in the Lynbrook Schools as a psychologist and a coach. He has served on the CSE, has been responsible for coordinating the Special Education program at LHS and was instrumental in developing a crisis interven- tion team. Dr. O'Sullivan was awarded LINK 'S Man of the Year award in 1988. Teacher James Ayres indicated to the Board that ERTA agreed to meet on 1/8/90 at 8:00 in Rms 2 and 3 of East Rockaway High School. The Board approved four policy statements: Smoke- Free Environment, Crisis Intervention Policy, Promo- tion & Retention Policy & Regulations and an Invest- ment Policy. Also approved was a reso- lution raising to $15,625 the maximum earnings/income which a senior citizen may earn and still be eligible for some level of tax exemption. These exemptions, based on earnings/ income are avail- able to eligible seniors who reach 65 yaers of age during 1990. Construction Manager Eric Johnson of W. J. Bar- ney Co. reported that the district needs the coopera- tion of all contractors to complete the new Rhame Avenue School for occu- pancy during Presidents' Week in February. Mrs. Marie Oleksa, Dean of Lan- guage Arts, reported on a successful staff development program for elementary teachers and English Department teachers con- ducted by Dr. Charles Chew, N.Y.S. A parent in the audience expressed pride in the fact that his kinder- garten child can now read the flyers sent home by the school. Superintendent Robert Parry reported successful guest appearances at Rhame and Centre by Ellen Rosen- berg on \Growing Up, Feel- ing Good\ and by Dennis Oehler, a nationally known \handicapped\ athlete and speaker who motivates children and adults to meet their potential. High school seniors recently donated blood to the Red Cross Blood Bank and all high school students received photo LD. cards in a pro- gram co-sponsored by the Nassau Police and ERHS Student Council. In Janu- ary, 14 students will partic- ipate in the All-County Music Festival at C.W. Post. These young musicians will join with the best musicians of other schools in concerts that astound audiences each year. Little Shop of Horrors moves from off-Broadway to Ocean Avenue with stu- dent performances on Feb- ruary 9th and 10th. East Rockaway School District will co-sponsor Family Math Day for par- ents and children to be held at Oceanside H.S. on Sat- urday, March 24th. In May, we will host a county con- ference for districts using \Voyage of the Mimi\ a multi-media learning project. The Board of Education extends Season's Greetings to the community with the wish that 1990 will bring with it a spirit of cooperation and dedication toward dis- trict improvement. Film Schedule Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta has announced the schedule of films which will be shown at Garvies Point Museum dur- ing January. Weekend films will have showings each day at 11 AM, 2 and 3 PM. The schedule follows: Sat. Runaway Ralph (40min) The charming sequel to The Mouse and the Motorcycle, both from Beverly Cleary's books. Apples APPLES. Ms. Leee's Kindergarten class at Rhame Avenue School studied the fall harvest with an exploration of apples. We used our senses to describe and write about 4 different types of apples. We had an apple tasting contest and voted on our favorite type. Red Delicious won! We then chopped and cooked our apples to make applesauce. We made a class book about our apple experiences to read for the rest of the year.
